BOYNTON, a half brother to CONSTITUTION, and the newest Graded Stakes winning home-bred for Twin Creeks Farm.
Catching the eye when successful in a smart maiden over six furlongs at Goodwood June 3, Boynton emerged on top of a thrilling tussle between two class acts to upstage War Decree in what looked a very strong renewal of this pointer to next year’s Classics. Held up last early by Adam Kirby as Cunco (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) helped ensure a solid gallop, the chestnut made smooth headway on the far side at halfway to gain the lead from War Decree with a quarter mile remaining. Headed by that much-vaunted rival a furlong later, he looked set to surrender much as his stablemate Hawkbill (Kitten’s Joy) had done in the Eclipse on Saturday but like him managed to wrest back the advantage 100 yards further on and draw away for a convincing win, with the remainder strung out behind.
“He’s a galloper who really sticks his head out and tries and I think the future’s quite bright for him,” his rider commented. “He stayed at it really strong and has a lovely action and is a good mover who is good in his wind.” Charlie Appleby added, “He put in a piece of work last Saturday on the Limekilns gallop that made us very happy. He has come on so much mentally since Goodwood, where William [Buick] said he was a cut above average and he got a great ride from Adam who let come in his own time. He galloped out strongly and we’ll look at the [G1 Goffs Vincent O’Brien] National [S. at The Curragh Sept. 11], but we’ll see how he is after this.” Boynton has a bright future indeed, and as a half-brother to the 2014 GI Florida Derby and GI Donn H. hero Constitution and the GIII Tempted S. scorer Jacaranda could even switch to dirt at some point. The dam Baffled was third in the G3 Albany S. at the Royal meeting for the Jeremy Noseda stable and is a full-sister to the G2 Al Maktoum Challenge Round 1 winner Surfer and a half to the GI Forego S. winner Emcee (Unbridled’s Song) from the extended family of the GI Spinaway S. heroine Awesome Humor (Distorted Humor). As well as the as-yet unraced 3-year-old colt Ahora (Tiznow), she also has a yearling filly by Graydar and was bred to Tapit for 2016.
